Alice Mascarenhas reports: Mayor of Gibraltar Olga Zammitt expressed her delight at her visit to the Gibtelecom Chess Festival on Friday (29th) afternoon. It was she said “highly impressive” to have seen the festival on the move and the major organization behind the scenes making it all happen.
Mrs Zammitt commented she had always followed with interest the development of the festival over the years and it had been wonderful to see the full operation at first hand.
“The concentration and passion the players show for the game, the very well run tournament, and its success,” she said could be classified as a, “triple achievement for Gibraltar, the world of chess and the hotel itself.”
She spent some time at the start of the Masters tournament on the fourth day of the tournament and was shown round by Chief Arbiter David Welch, accompanied by James Humphreys, chairman of Tradewise Insurance, representing the sponsors.

Mrs Zammitt was interviewed live over the internet as the analysis sessions got going with Stuart Conquest, and called on the thousands around the world tuned in for the afternoon that they were all welcomed to visit Gibraltar and experience not just chess but everything else that Gibraltar had to offer.
“Come and see us in Gibraltar,” she told the around 40,000 visitors and players logged into the live-streaming on the website carrying pictures and commentary of the Masters. Surprised at the staggering figure which she agreed was certainly helping to put Gibraltar and the chess world on the map.
