2011 Gibraltar Junior International Chess Festival

 

The Gibraltar Junior International Chess Festival takes place from Friday 19 August to Monday 22 August. Competitors arrive on 18 August and depart on 23 August (five nights' stay). The event is run under the auspices of the English Chess Federation and in association with the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival. The prize fund totals £6,000.

There are two categories: a) open to competitors aged under 16 on 1 January 2011 (i.e. born in 1995 or later); b) open to competitors aged under 12 on 1 January 2011 (i.e. born in 1999 or later).

 

The organisers of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, widely recognised as the best Open tournament in the world, have decided to establish a Gibraltar Junior International Chess Festival which will take place in August each year. The venue will be the Caleta Hotel and follow the successful pattern of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, offering some good and very competitive chess-playing opportunities with an equally strong social, fun and educational programme.

It has been decided that rooms are obviously too precious for the Junior and Master’s tournaments therefore instead of re-inviting the winner they will receive a £200 travel contribution should he/she decide to come back for the Junior Tournament, or if he/she does not qualify any longer and decides to play in the Amateur / Challenger Tournaments.

 

No winner can win more than one main prize.

Visiting Celebrity Chess Players

 

Throughout the tournament there will be a number of visiting celebrities. Pia Cramling, the 2010 European Women's Champion and ranked 5th in the Women's World Rating List, has agreed to be in Gibraltar over the festival weekend with her family, including Spanish grandmaster Juan Bellon Lopez, and has offered to assist with a simultaneous display and coaching.

 

Grandmaster Stuart Conquest, the highly respected English grandmaster, 2008 British Champion and director of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, the world's best open, has also agreed to visit at the time of the tournament and will give a master class and analysis.
