Iturrizaga was born in Caracas (1989). He learned chess at age five at 13 thirteen, became an International Master.

 

He won consecutive national championships from 2005 to 2008, and has been playing for Venezuela at the Olympiad since 2004. His best performance came at the 37th Olympiad in 2006, when he scored 8½/11 on board 2. In 2008, he won an online qualifier for the C-group in the 2009 Corus Tournament, defeating GM Alexandr Fier 3-1 in the finals.

 

After sharing first place at the Zonal Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, Iturrizaga qualified for the Chess World Cup 2009. The same year, he won the 12th Dubai Open Chess Championship with 7/9, ahead of a field consisting of 36 GMs and 154 players total.

 

Iturrizaga's FIDE rating is 2656 (Nov 2011), making him number 96 in the world, and the highest rated player in the Venezuela.
