Sergei Movsesian was born in 1978 in Tbilisi, (Georgian SSR, USSR). He is an Armenian GM who used to play for Slovakia, but as of late 2010, announced that he now plays for his home country of Armenia.

Sergei was a member of the gold-medal winning Armenian team at the World Team Chess Championship in Ningbo 2011.

In 1999, he reached quarterfinals of the FIDE World Chess Championship in Las Vegas, but lost to Vladimir Akopian, 1½-2½.

He won international tournaments in Sarajevo (2002 and 2007); 2007 Czech Coal Carlsbad tournament in Karlovy Vary; Mikhail Chigorin Memorial in Saint Petersburg in 2007 and the B-tournament of the Corus Chess Tournament in 2008.

He speaks eight languages fluently.
